    This is the article's trust anchor, so it gets the full, honest answer rather than a one-word one. ReptiFiles states directly that blue-tongue skinks can be raised, bred, and maintained for decades without UVB — so it is not technically required for survival ReptiFiles. That's half the answer, and several competing pages stop there and call it "optional." The other half matters just as much: dietary D3 and UVB-synthesized D3 are metabolized differently, and reptiles with appropriate UVB exposure show measurably healthier blood vitamin D levels than supplement-only animals. Best practice is to provide it.

    The strongest single argument in this whole debate, and one rarely stated plainly: photosynthesized D3 is self-regulating — an animal cannot overdose on the D3 it makes from UV exposure — while oral D3 from supplements carries a genuine toxicity risk at higher doses.     Why a UV Gradient Matters More Than the Peak Number

    The ranges overlap around 2.6–3.0, and that overlap is where we recommend targeting — build a genuine gradient so the animal can move from a high UVI at basking down to near-zero in shade, and verify with a meter rather than trusting a chart. Mount the tube over the warm half of the enclosure only, and place hides on the cool end where UVI drops to zero — a correct gradient makes much of this disagreement far less consequential than it looks on paper, because the animal is never forced to sit at a single, contested number.     Options include Arcadia's D3 12% (Desert) and D3+ 6% (Forest), and Zoo Med's ReptiSun T5 HO 10.0 and 5.0. Arcadia's own product documentation lists blue-tongued skinks among the species suited to its 12% desert bulb — a manufacturer specification that independently confirms the higher-output choice for this genus Arcadia.

    ReptiFiles recommends only Zoo Med and Arcadia.     The likely mechanical cause of the spread: sources aren't consistently distinguishing basking-surface temperature (an IR gun reading on the stone), air temperature just above the basking site, and warm-end ambient. Those are three different numbers, and care sheets rarely specify which one they're quoting. Our recommendation — roughly 100–105°F measured directly on the basking surface with an IR thermometer — sits inside every source's range once you control for what's actually being measured.

    Warm End, Cool End, Nighttime

    Cool end runs 70–85°F for Australian types and 75–85°F for Indonesian types; night drops to 65–75°F for Australians and 70–75°F for Indonesians ReptiFiles.     Halogen flood — the default. Not a household round bulb; halogens burn hotter and last longer.     CHE / radiant heat panel — night and ambient only. ReptiFiles is explicit that non-light-emitting sources aren't appropriate for daytime use. A practical constraint worth knowing: radiant heat panels typically raise enclosure temperature only about 20°F over ambient room temperature, so a genuinely cold room limits what a panel can achieve on its own.
