    Lighting is the part of a chameleon setup most guides get wrong in the smallest, most consequential ways. They'll name a bulb brand and stop there — no UVI target, no mounting distance, no correction for screen loss, and often a basking temperature borrowed from a decade-old care sheet. This guide gives the actual numbers: the specific ultraviolet index chameleons evolved under, the distance chart to hit it, and the species-specific basking temperatures currently recommended rather than the inflated ones still circulating.

    The Three Lights Every Chameleon Needs

    A correct chameleon lighting rig is really three separate fixtures doing three separate jobs, and conflating them is where most setups go wrong. First, a linear UVB tube — this is the non-negotiable one, since it drives vitamin D3 synthesis and has nothing to do with visible brightness. Second, a 6500K daylight or plant-growth LED, which gives the enclosure usable daytime brightness and keeps live plants healthy, but contributes essentially no UVB itself. Third, a basking heat bulb, sized to produce a specific surface temperature at the basking branch rather than to look impressive on the shelf. Each does a job the other two can't substitute for, and skipping any one of them is a common, avoidable mistake.

    UVB: Why It Matters (D3, MBD)

    UVB exposure drives a chameleon's own synthesis of vitamin D3 in the skin, and D3 is what allows the body to actually use dietary calcium LafeberVet, "UVB Lighting for Reptiles". Without adequate UVB, that pathway breaks down regardless of how much calcium powder goes on the feeder insects, and the result is nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism — better known as metabolic bone disease, or MBD.     Ferguson Zone 3 & Your UVI Target

    Reptile lighting research classifies species into "Ferguson Zones" based on how much natural ultraviolet exposure they experience and select in the wild. Veiled, panther, and Jackson's chameleons all fall into Ferguson Zone 3 — average UVI 1.0–2.6, with a maximum recorded UVI of 2.9–7.4 Baines et al. 2016, Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research 4(1):42–63.     Think of the inside of the enclosure as a vertical gradient rather than a single number. At the cage top, right under the fixture, UVI can run as high as 6 — that's the ceiling, and it's fine for a chameleon to pass through briefly on its way up the branches. At the basking branch itself, 6–9 inches below the fixture, the target is UVI 3 — the number the animal should be sitting in for its actual basking time. Further down and further from the fixture, UVI tapers toward zero in the shaded lower half of the enclosure, giving the animal a real choice to self-regulate exposure the same way it would moving through dappled forest canopy. A correct setup isn't one UVI reading — it's that whole gradient, present at once, so the animal can move through it.

    Measure the actual UVI at the basking branch with a Solarmeter 6.5 rather than trusting a distance chart alone — it's the only way to confirm what the animal is really receiving once bulb age, fixture reflector quality, and screen mesh are all factored in together.

    Choosing a UVB Bulb (6% vs 12% vs T8/Compact)

    Not every UVB bulb is built the same way, and the differences matter more than the percentage number alone suggests.

    The default for most builds is a linear T5 HO 6% tube — either the Arcadia ProT5 Forest or the Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 — run the full width of the cage so the basking branch sits inside consistent UV coverage rather than a single hot spot. A 12% tube is only appropriate if the fixture has to sit unusually far above the screen to hit the target UVI; mounted at a normal height, a 12% bulb will typically overshoot Zone 3 by a wide margin. The Arcadia ShadeDweller, despite carrying Arcadia's own name, is built for shade-dwelling species with a different output curve entirely and is not a substitute for a Forest-line tube here. Compact, coil, and T8 UVB bulbs are worth avoiding outright for a chameleon build — they don't deliver the even, cage-spanning coverage a linear T5 HO fixture does Chameleon Academy, "UVB".

    Positioning UVB (Distance, Screen Loss, Basking Branch)

    Mount the UVB fixture on or just above the screen top, and position the basking branch roughly 6–9 inches below it Chameleon Academy, "UVB". In practice, a screen top sits in that path and takes a real bite out of the number. Chameleon Academy notes that most commercially sold screen cages use a screen mesh with roughly 70% UV transmission, meaning it filters out about 30% of the UVB energy passing through it. A separate figure from Dr. Frances Baines, published via Reptiles Magazine, puts a common Exo Terra mesh closer to 65% transmission — a roughly 35% loss. Both figures are legitimate and come from credible sources measuring different mesh products, so treat 28–35% as the realistic screen-loss range rather than picking a single number and rounding. Practically, that means a fixture-to-branch distance in the 15–18 inch range, run through typical screen, is a reasonable starting point for landing close to UVI 3 — followed by an actual Solarmeter reading to confirm it. Whether the enclosure is full screen or a hybrid build changes how much of that fixture's output actually reaches the branch, since a hybrid's screen top is typically a smaller fraction of the ceiling than a full-screen cage's.

    Basking Heat (Species Temps, Bulb Type)

    Basking temperature targets have shifted down from what many older sheets still print, and the current figures are species- and sex-specific: veiled male ~85°F, female ~80°F; panther male 85–90°F, female 80–85°F; Jackson's mid-80s, with ambient closer to 80°F for Jackson's given its montane origin Chameleon Academy, "Basking Temperature". Older care sheets citing 90–100°F should be treated as outdated — Chameleon Academy caps veiled specifically at 85°F to avoid over-energizing females into producing oversized, often infertile clutches, a real downstream cost of running a basking spot hotter than it needs to be. A night-time temperature drop into the 60s°F is healthy and expected, not a problem to correct.

    A modest halogen or incandescent basking bulb — not a Deep Heat Projector or ceramic heat emitter, which belong in a night or supplemental role rather than the primary daytime basking spot — is the standard choice here. Mount it above the cage, clear of the screen top, so a chameleon can't climb high enough to make contact with a hot fixture and burn its casque.

    Jackson's chameleon deserves its own specific caution here. As a montane species, it's adapted to a cooler, more stable thermal range than veiled or panther, and it doesn't have much margin for error on the hot side: keep basking in the mid-80s°F at most, with ambient closer to 80°F, since temperatures above roughly 88°F can be rapidly fatal to this species. That's a meaningfully lower ceiling than the other two common pet chameleons, and it's worth checking twice against a thermometer rather than assuming a bulb sized for a veiled or panther setup is automatically safe for a Jackson's.

    Don't do this

    Never mount a basking bulb where a climbing chameleon can reach it — casque burns from cage-top fixtures are a real, avoidable injury. Don't run last decade's 90–100°F basking target; the current evidence-based range is the low-to-mid-80s°F depending on species and sex. And for a Jackson's specifically, don't let basking-zone heat push past the mid-80s°F — this montane species can suffer rapid, fatal heat stress above roughly 88°F.

    Plant & Daylight Lighting (6500K)

    A separate 6500K daylight or plant-growth LED — the Arcadia Jungle Dawn and the Bio Dude Glow & Grow are both common choices — adds usable daytime brightness the UVB tube alone doesn't provide, and it keeps live plants in the enclosure healthy enough to serve as real cover and drinking surfaces ReptiFiles; Chameleon Academy. It contributes negligible UVB of its own, so it's an addition to the UVB tube, not a substitute for it.     Photoperiod & Night (No Light at Night)

    Run roughly a 12-hour photoperiod, and keep the enclosure genuinely dark at night — no light-emitting heat source of any kind after lights-out Chameleon Forums; ReptiFiles. If room temperature drops far enough to be a concern, generally below the 50–60°F range, a light-free heat source such as a ceramic heat emitter or Deep Heat Projector is appropriate for overnight use — but a chameleon's day/night cycle depends on genuine darkness, and skipping that disrupts the same circadian rhythm that governs its humidity and hydration cycle as well.

    Measuring & Replacing (Solarmeter, 12-Month Swap)

    A Solarmeter 6.5 is the only reliable way to confirm actual UVI at the basking branch, since a distance chart alone can't account for bulb age, fixture reflector condition, or the specific screen mesh in use. Take the reading at the basking branch itself, not at the fixture, and take it periodically rather than once at setup — output changes over the life of the tube even though nothing about its appearance does. UVB output degrades well before visible light does, which is why tubes need scheduled replacement regardless of whether they still look and function normally: Arcadia specifies roughly 12 months for its T5 tubes, while some Zoo Med tubes carry a shorter roughly 6-month rating PetMD; Chameleon Academy. Mark a replacement date on a calendar when a new tube goes in, since a bulb that still lights up normally can be delivering only a fraction of its original UVB output — the fixture will look completely unchanged from the day it went dark on the meter.

    A Solarmeter reading is also the fastest way to catch a setup problem that has nothing to do with the bulb itself. A fixture mounted slightly farther from the branch than planned, a thicker or lower-transmission screen than assumed, or a reflector that's picked up dust and grime can all quietly shift the actual UVI well away from the target even with a brand-new tube installed — which is exactly why a meter reading, not a distance-chart assumption, is the number worth trusting.

    Species Differences

    Veiled Chameleon

    Basking target ~85°F for an adult male, ~80°F for a female. Standard Zone 3 UVI 3 setup applies without modification — veiled is generally the most forgiving of the three common pet species when it comes to lighting margin for error.

    Panther Chameleon

    Basking target 85–90°F for males, 80–85°F for females — the widest species range of the three, so verify with an actual thermometer at the branch rather than assuming the male figure applies across the board.

    Jackson's Chameleon

    Basking in the mid-80s°F max, with ambient closer to 80°F given this species' montane origin — still a full Zone 3 UVI 3 target despite the lower heat. This is the one species on this list where getting the ceiling wrong carries real risk: temperatures above roughly 88°F can be rapidly fatal to a Jackson's. Jackson's is also more sensitive to D3 and vitamin A oversupplementation than veiled or panther, so keep supplementation conservative and consistent with a Zone 3 UVB setup rather than compensating with heavier dosing.
