    This is a caveat to our own figure, not a correction: “1–2in/week to near-adult size in 2–3 years” is accurate for its peak window, not a sustained rate — run 1.5in/week for 130 straight weeks and you'd overshoot adult size several times over.     Are Grow-Out Tubs a Legitimate Stage or a Welfare Compromise?

    Legitimate — worth stating plainly. No welfare-organization or veterinary source in this pass criticizes short-term tub housing for hatchling tegus, provided heat, UVB, and humidity are correctly supplied; every concern is about thermal/UVB provision, not the tub format. The security mechanism covered in the staging debate below actually favors smaller, opaque-sided housing at this stage over a large display enclosure — though that inference borrows from a different species' literature, not a tegu-specific study. One recurring Tegu Talk note (forum-level): skittishness here is often triggered by reaching in from above, since predators approach from above in the wild — an argument for side- or front-opening access even at the tub stage.

    Stage 2: The Sub-Adult Tier That Doesn't Officially Exist

    The Case for Buying Big

    Kages' own 8x4x4 product page markets the enclosure explicitly for “Young and adult Tegu.” The Bio Dude's Argentine tegu care sheet gives one universal 8x4x4 spec rather than staged sizes, reasoning that “they need a lot of space even from the beginning.” HappyDragons “strongly recommends starting with full-sized adult enclosures for all ages when possible,” and ReptiFiles (search snippet only, direct fetch blocked) states young tegus “can usually be housed in adult-sized enclosures with no problem.” Even Kages, notably, also sells a dedicated 4x2x2 marketed as a “Young Tegu Enclosure” — a real product category, not pure upsell talk.

    The most detailed mechanism-level evidence for staging isn't tegu-specific, flagged as such rather than presented as if it were. Real breeder practice is the practical evidence here: Dynasty Reptiles' small communal tubs, not adult-scale enclosures, are the trade's actual working default for hatchlings. No tegu-specific peer-reviewed or veterinary source directly studies feeding refusal or stress in oversized hatchling-tegu enclosures — a genuine open gap, stated plainly.

    Why the Adult UVB Stack Doesn't Fit a Juvenile Enclosure

    A genuine, derived constraint — this guide's own reasoning, since no source states it for tegus directly. BB-082's rule: a 14% tube mounts 18–24 inches from the animal, never closer than 12 inches with the reflector on. Applied to real juvenile dimensions: a hatchling tub or 36x18x18 enclosure is typically only 17–18 inches tall. Subtract substrate and a basking platform, and clearance can fall below BB-082's 12-inch adult floor — meaning the adult-stack UVB percentage may not physically fit safely at this height.

    This tracks with real breeder practice not running the 14% tube at the tub stage — Dynasty Reptiles uses the lower-output Zoo Med T5 HO 10.0 instead.     Tegu basking temperature is quoted inconsistently across care content because two genuinely different measurements are reported as if they were one number — matching the stack target our high-output UVB and heating guide and complete tegu setup guide already use for adults.

    Six sources, air/ambient 95–110°F for basking-zone air/ambient temperature — LafeberVet, Wildwood Vet, Reptiles Magazine, Tails and Scales, Dynasty Reptiles, Bean Farm. Two sources, self-labeled “surface” 125–135°F for contact/surface temperature at the basking point — The Bio Dude, HappyDragons, both explicitly labeling the figure “surface.”

    No source in this pass gave a genuinely unreconcilable number outside either band. Several underlying sources don't self-label which measurement they mean — the labeling above is this pass's own pattern-match against the two that do specify, not a claim every source states outright. Measure both: an infrared gun on the basking surface, a digital probe for the surrounding air.
