    Uromastyx need the hottest basking surface of any common pet lizard — about 120–140°F — plus Ferguson Zone 4 UVB (Arcadia 14% T5) and an ambient gradient into the low 80s°F. They're strict herbivores (seeds, legumes, greens; no animal protein) that get most water from food but still shelter in a humid burrow, so give deep substrate they can dig.

    Most uromastyx care content falls into one of two camps. Either it repeats "no water, ever — it's a desert animal" as an absolute rule, full stop, or it under-specifies the basking heat and UVB output this genus actually needs, leaving readers with an enclosure that's technically dry but nowhere near hot or bright enough to keep the animal healthy. Both extremes cause real harm. This guide sets the actual numbers — Zone 4 UVB, a 120–140°F basking surface, a strict herbivore diet — and gives the water-bowl and sand-impaction debates the honest, both-sides treatment they deserve rather than quietly picking a side.

    Uromastyx Species & Size — What Changes Your Enclosure

    Roughly 20 uromastyx species and subspecies exist, and the taxonomy itself is genuinely disputed among herpetologists ReptiFiles. For a keeper, what matters is that "uromastyx" isn't one size — the enclosure math changes meaningfully depending on which species you're housing.

    The species most common in the US trade are on the smaller end: U. geyri (Saharan/yellow uromastyx, roughly 34–38 cm), U. ornata (roughly 37 cm), and U. dispar maliensis (roughly 38 cm). A step up in size are U. nigriventris (Moroccan uromastyx, roughly 42 cm) and U. acanthinura (roughly 40 cm).     Common Species — Geyri, Ornata, Maliensis

    The bulk of pet uromastyx sold in the US fall here. A 4x2x2 PVC enclosure is the modern floor for an adult of any of these three, and bigger is always welcome. This is the size class most of this guide's numbers are written for.

    Larger Species — Moroccan (Nigriventris), Acanthinura

    Noticeably bigger-bodied than the geyri/ornata group. Plan for roughly a 6x3x2 minimum footprint rather than the 4x2x2 floor, with the same basking and UVB targets as the smaller species scaled to a wider basking zone.

    Egyptian Uromastyx (U. aegyptia / microlepis)

    A genuinely large lizard at up to 30 inches and 1.6 kg — this species needs custom large housing in the 8x4x2 to 8x5x3 class, not an off-the-shelf arid enclosure.     Enclosure Size & Why 4x2x2 Is the Floor

    For the common species, a 4x2x2 front-opening PVC enclosure is the modern floor — not a starting point to grow out of, but a genuine adult-size minimum Reptilian Source; ReptiFiles. Front-opening PVC retains heat and humidity far better than a top-opening glass tank, and a mesh or screen section in the top is still worth having for ventilation, so the enclosure can shed excess humidity and heat rather than trapping it.     Heating — The Extreme Basking Surface

    Uromastyx run hotter than almost any other lizard commonly kept as a pet. Target a basking surface of 120–140°F ReptiFiles cites 120–130°F; Arids Only and WebMD's Egyptian care data extend the range to 120–140°F. Warm-side ambient air should sit around 85–92°F, the cool end 78–82°F, with a night drop to roughly 65°F Arids Only; WebMD.

    Deliver that heat with halogen flood bulbs spread across a WIDE basking area — nose to tail — rather than a single tight spotlight. A small, intensely hot point risks a thermal burn and still fails to warm the animal's whole body evenly Arids Only. A common working combination is a 100W PAR38 halogen flood mounted with the basking platform roughly 10–12 inches below it ReptiFiles. Build the platform up as a Retes stack — layered flagstone or slate with spacers between the layers — so the animal can move between levels and self-select its exact preferred temperature rather than being stuck with one single reading Aly's Dragons; ReptiFiles.     Build a Retes stack of flagstone or slate under the basking bulb rather than a single flat platform. It gives the animal several slightly different temperatures to choose between, so it self-selects the exact heat it wants instead of you guessing at one number.

    UVB — Ferguson Zone 4 & Arcadia 14%

    Uromastyx are Ferguson Zone 4 full-sun baskers, the most demanding UVB category in the hobby — this site's own Ferguson-zone canon puts the Zone 4 average at roughly UVI 2.6–3.5 and up Baines et al., 2016; site UVB Requirements by Species canon. In captivity, a practical basking-zone target of UVI 4.5–6.0 is the commonly cited working number ReptiFiles — consistent with the same pattern this site uses for Zone 3 species, where the recommended captive basking target runs higher than the zone's average wild-exposure figure.

    Distance and mesh both change the dose meaningfully.     Substrate & the Humid-Burrow Paradox

    Here's the part that surprises a lot of new keepers: even this "extreme desert" lizard lives in a humid burrow in the wild. The surface stays dry and blazing hot while the burrow a few inches down holds real moisture.     The sand-impaction question is genuinely contested and worth flagging honestly rather than picking a side. Some exotic vets report fatal sand impactions in uromastyx and recommend a millet or soil-based mix instead — or, for a quarantine setup specifically, plain paper Aurora Animal Hospital care sheet. Against that, many experienced keepers report using sand successfully for years with no impaction issues, provided calcium levels and basking temperatures are correct so digestion works properly. The safer middle ground, and what this guide leans toward, is a packed sand-soil mix that holds a burrow shape rather than loose, fine sand on its own — a packed mix is both more burrow-stable and generally considered the lower-risk option in this debate.

    One structural note that's easy to overlook: any heavy rocks or flagstone used for basking or as part of a Retes stack should rest on the enclosure floor itself, not balanced on top of the sand layer, so a digging animal can't undermine the base and get crushed Reptilian Source.     The Water-Bowl Debate

    This is the single most argued-over question in uromastyx keeping, and it deserves a genuinely weighed answer rather than a flat rule in either direction.

    Position A — no standing water. Most experienced keepers skip a water bowl entirely.     Position B — a small or temporary bowl. The counter-argument is that a small, shallow bowl won't meaningfully raise humidity in an enclosure this hot and dry to begin with, and that going without any water access at all is linked to chronic low-grade dehydration and kidney disease in aging captive animals.     Exotics Keeper writer Kamiel adds that offering a shallow bowl, especially for a novice keeper, "is certainly not a bad thing" — and some countries' animal-welfare regulations legally require water access for captive reptiles regardless of species-specific husbandry debates.

    Evidence-weighted synthesis: moisture should come primarily from food, and a brief morning bowl or lightly misted greens is a reasonable hedge against the chronic dehydration and renal disease that Position B's evidence points to — without keeping the enclosure persistently humid. Avoid a permanent, always-full water dish; that's the version of "giving water" that actually does raise humidity meaningfully.     Diet — Herbivore, No Animal Protein

    Uromastyx are strict herbivores. Feed leafy greens as the base, plus seeds and legumes — lentils, split peas, millet, and general bird-seed mixes are all standard staples among experienced keepers Arids Only; ReptiFiles. A grassland-tortoise pellet, such as Zoo Med's Grassland formula, is a commonly used supplement to round out the diet.

    Adults should never be fed animal protein. It's specifically linked to kidney problems and gout risk in this genus, which makes it a meaningfully different rule from many other pet lizards that do need some insect or protein component Arids Only; ReptiFiles. Excess fruit should also be limited — the sugar content is a similar long-term burden on the kidneys as animal protein. Hard, chalky urates in the feces are a practical warning sign of dehydration, since most of this species' hydration comes through moist greens rather than drinking water.

    Signs of Dehydration & Why Glass Tanks Fail

    Glass tanks consistently underperform for uromastyx husbandry, and it's worth understanding exactly why rather than just being told to avoid them. A glass tank is poor at delivering an efficiently localized hot zone — heat escapes through the glass and the open top far faster than through PVC — and if you cover the top to compensate, you trap humidity instead, undoing the dry-surface half of the humid-burrow model this species actually needs.
