Glass surfing — scratching, pacing or climbing at the enclosure walls — is a recognized captivity-stress behavior that veterinary welfare literature calls interaction with transparent boundaries. The usual causes are an undersized enclosure, a wrong basking temperature, visible reflections or other animals, and a barren layout. Check enclosure size and surface temperature first; persistent surfing can cause snout abrasion.

Naming this properly is the entire credibility play here, so let's start with it directly. A Gravid Female Looking for a Lay Site
Restless digging and wall-climbing in a female can indicate she's searching for somewhere to lay. This behavior is well recognized in keeping practice — if it continues without her actually laying, that's a vet call for possible egg binding.
Hunger and Feeding Routine
Real, but frequently over-attributed. A dragon that surfs only in the half-hour before its usual feeding time is a genuinely different case from one surfing all day regardless of schedule.
Genuine Exploratory Behavior in Juveniles
Some glass interaction in juveniles is partly exploratory and more common in younger dragons generally. The Thermal Gradient Is Wrong
This is the most commonly missed cause, and it deserves the most attention in this whole article. Basking surface temperature runs 105–110°F for adults, with a cool side surface around 77–85°F — measured with an infrared temperature gun at the exact surface the dragon presses against, not the ambient air.

The core misunderstanding worth correcting directly: many care sheets still print a basking figure without specifying surface versus air temperature. A surface reading at only 95°F won't get the animal to its optimal core body temperature — the dragon ends up spending more time basking trying to get warm, the cool side goes unused entirely, and appetite loss, lethargy, and slowed growth follow from that single measurement error.
Worth naming a genuine conflict here rather than glossing over it: other credible sources warn against the high end of basking figures, noting that in a standard 4×2×2, basking recommendations above the top of this range can be problematic because the enclosure isn't long enough to produce a gradual gradient — some advise not exceeding the mid-90s°F in the cool area and not letting it drop below the low 70s°F. The resolution: the actual target is a real gradient, not a single number. The UVB Setup Is Wrong

Here's the reconciliation that actually resolves this for a reader: the 1.0–2.6 figure is a zone mean, the 2.9–7.4 range is the observed basking maximum, and the 4.0–4.5 captive target is set against the basking maximum, not the mean. These aren't contradicting each other — they're measuring different things, and most care sheets don't say which one they're quoting.
The gradient point matters more than the exact number: UVI should run from 0 at the cool end up to the target at basking, and the dragon needs a genuinely UVB-free retreat available. In a short enclosure, this gradient compresses and UVB saturates a larger proportion of the floor, reducing the animal's ability to self-regulate its own exposure. A dragon with no shade to retreat into is a plausible driver of ITB — worth connecting explicitly, though as a reasoned inference rather than a directly documented finding. Bulb type matters too: a linear T5 HO tube covering roughly two-thirds of the enclosure, mounted on the basking side, replaced every 12 months regardless of visible output, with no glass or mesh between the tube and the animal where avoidable.
Reflections and Line of Sight
Dragons may react to their own reflection as a territorial rival — minimizing reflections with an external background covering, like window film or a vinyl background, is the standard mitigation. Dragons can also get stressed simply seeing other lizards, even in a completely separate enclosure, along with other pets, TVs, and general household foot traffic within line of sight. Cohabitation
Don't cohabitate bearded dragons. A dominant individual can bully another, causing genuine stress — separate housing is the correct default, not the exception.
A Recent Change, or a Brand-New Setup
Dragons are sensitive to environmental change — a new enclosure, rearranged décor, changed lighting, or a diet shift can all trigger a behavioral shift. Introduce changes gradually, one or two items at a time, rather than overhauling everything at once. A newly acquired dragon gets some settling-in latitude, but don't use "he's settling in" to excuse weeks of frantic surfing that isn't actually improving.
The Enclosure Is Barren

Traffic, Noise and Being Watched
Enclosure placement in the room matters — height, and specifically whether the dragon sits at eye level with people walking past regularly, can be a contributing factor worth checking alongside every other cause on this list.
How to Work Out Which One It Is
This diagnostic method is the part almost every competing article skips entirely.
Film it, don't watch it. Standing in front of the enclosure observing is itself a variable that changes the animal's behavior. Take ten-minute phone videos at three different times of day instead.
Log the time of day, duration, which wall, what was happening in the room at that moment, and the surface temperature at both the basking spot and the cool end when it happened. Reading the pattern tells you a lot: surfing at one specific wall points to line of sight or reflection; surfing only in the hour after lights-on points to a thermal cause; all-day surfing across every wall points to space or a compressed gradient; seasonal onset in autumn in an adult points to brumation. Change one variable at a time and re-observe for 48 to 72 hours before concluding it worked.

Film it instead of watching it. You standing at the glass is one of the variables you're actually trying to test — your presence changes the behavior you're trying to observe.
When Glass Surfing Is a Health Sign
Escalate to a vet if surfing comes with rapid weight loss, sunken eyes, discharge from the eyes or nose, labored or open-mouth breathing, weakness, unresponsiveness, or a foul smell from the enclosure. Summer-onset lethargy or a behavior change, or significant lethargy in a dragon under 12 months, should be treated as potential illness from the outset rather than assumed to be seasonal. Because brumation-like signs closely resemble gastrointestinal parasites and other genuine illnesses, a veterinary check is worth having any time these signs appear together. A gravid female that's been restless and digging without ever actually laying needs a prompt vet visit for possible egg binding.
What Doesn't Work
Sticking a background on and calling it solved, when the real problem is a 3-foot enclosure the background can't fix. "They grow out of it" — ITB is described in the literature as often persistent, not self-resolving. Handling the dragon to reassure it — reptiles don't take reassurance from handling, and it adds a stressor rather than removing one. Ignoring it because it looks funny — the documented rostral friction lesions are the counter-argument to that instinct.
