Monitor Lizard Enclosure Guide (Ackie & Savannah)

    Ackie and savannah monitors are hot-basking burrowers, not desert animals. Give a deep, moisture-holding substrate (12"+) they can tunnel in, a very hot basking surface (ackies roughly 120–150°F, savannahs roughly 130–150°F surface), a cool end near 80°F, roughly 50% ambient air with a much more humid burrow, and — for savannahs especially — an insect-based diet, not rodents.

    The pet-store savannah monitor setup — a shallow tank, a dry bowl of sand, and a rodent every week or two — is close to a recipe for a short, unhealthy life, and the science explaining why has been sitting in the herpetological literature since 2000.     Two Very Different Monitors

    Ackie Monitor (Varanus acanthurus)

    Roughly 24–28 inches total length, and widely considered the hobby's most practical monitor — intelligent, relatively tractable with consistent handling, and an intermediate difficulty level that's genuinely approachable for a keeper moving up from smaller lizards Dubia; ReptileDirect; PetsWithScales.

    Savannah Monitor (Varanus exanthematicus)

    Larger at 3–4 feet and roughly 8–15 lb as an adult, a powerful digger, and often wild-caught — which brings a real parasite-load risk on arrival. Best suited to an experienced keeper rather than a first monitor Tree of Life Exotics; A-Z Animals.

    The Savannah "Desert Myth" — What the Science Actually Says

    Wild savannah monitors are grassland animals of sub-Saharan West and Central Africa, not desert specialists, and they shelter in burrows rather than living out in the open. They're also strongly seasonal: active and gorging during the wet season, then aestivating in burrows or tree holes and living off stored fat through the dry season.

    The wild diet data is the part most pet-trade content skips entirely. In Senegal, adult savannah monitors ate almost exclusively arthropods and molluscs — mainly Iulus millipedes Cisse 1972, cited in Bennett 2004. In Ghana, juveniles ate mostly crickets and other orthopterans, especially Brachytrupes membranaceus, whose burrows the young monitors also used directly as shelter Bennett 2004, cited in the IUCN Red List assessment; Wikipedia "Savannah monitor," citing Cisse & Bennett. Rodents are essentially absent from this picture.

    Put the two failure modes together — desert-style dry keeping and a rodent-heavy diet fed year-round — and you get exactly the outcome exotic vets commonly report in captive savannahs: obesity, hepatic lipidosis, and organ or renal disease Tree of Life Exotics; Whispering Pines Pet Clinic; Merck Veterinary Manual. No credible source gives a numeric prevalence rate for how often this happens — it's accurately described as commonly reported by exotic veterinarians, not quantified with a percentage, and this guide isn't going to invent one.

    Don't do this

    Feeding a savannah monitor a rodent-heavy diet in a dry tank is the fastest documented route to obesity and fatty-liver disease. The wild diet is almost entirely invertebrates, not rodents.

    It's worth being honest that not every source agrees on the specific numbers to use in captivity. Older veterinary and care-sheet sources give more conservative figures — Whispering Pines lists basking around 110°F with humidity above 60%; Chicago Exotics gives 95–100°F; some general care guides describe savannah habitat simply as "flexible, dry grasslands." Newer sources built around the burrow-microclimate model — the Dubia/ReptiFiles lineage and Reptilian Source — give a hotter basking surface (130–150°F) with roughly 50% ambient air humidity and a much more humid burrow underneath. This guide presents the burrow-microclimate model as the position carrying the weight of current field evidence, while naming the older, more conservative figures honestly rather than pretending they don't exist in the literature.

    Enclosure Size by Species

    Ackie: the commonly cited absolute minimum is 4×2×2 Dubia; PetsWithScales, but several experienced sources argue for meaningfully more — ReptiFiles recommends 5×2.5×4, Swell suggests 6×2×2, and SnakeTracks recommends 6×3×3. Treat 4×2×2 as the bare minimum and 6×3×2 or larger as the recommended target.

    Savannah: enclosure needs scale to 8×4×4-class housing by keeper consensus, with Whispering Pines stating plainly that a 4×8×4 build is better than the 3×6×3 minimum some sources list. A savannah is a large, powerful digger, so a reinforced floor and deep substrate matter just as much here as they do for a tegu.     Substrate & the Burrow Microclimate

    Savannah substrate depth should run at least 12 inches, and preferably deeper — Reptiles Magazine notes that a 130°F basking surface is safe specifically because at least 2 feet of substrate is present to let the animal retreat from it Reptiles Magazine; ReptiFiles/Reptile Supply. Ackies do well with 8–12 inches or more.     The technique that actually creates the burrow microclimate: add water directly into the substrate itself, not just to the enclosure air, so the burrow interior stays humid while the surface stays dry Dubia; Reptile Supply. This is the single detail that resolves most of the apparent "dry vs. humid" disagreement in older care content — both are correct, just for different layers of the same enclosure.

    For the mix itself, Bio Dude's Terra Sahara and Terra Firma lines and ReptiChip's burrowing substrate are all built specifically to hold a dug tunnel at this depth without collapsing, which matters more here than it does for a shallow-substrate species — a mix that's merely damp but doesn't compact will cave in behind a digging monitor rather than holding the burrow's shape open. Whichever mix you choose, build it in layers rather than dumping the full depth in at once: pack and moisten as you fill, so the moisture gradient that creates the humid interior is actually built into the substrate from the bottom up, rather than sitting on top of a dry fill and hoping it works its way down on its own.

    Heating & the Hot Basking Surface (Retes Stack)

    Ackie basking surface should run 120–150°F, with some keepers reporting up to roughly 170°F on a stone stack; warm-side air sits around 85–100°F, cool end 75–85°F Dubia; PetsWithScales; All Angles Creatures; SnakeTracks. Savannah basking surface runs 130–150°F, but air temperature must not exceed roughly 120°F even while the surface itself runs hotter Dubia; BambooZoo; Reptiles Magazine. That surface-vs-air distinction is the single most commonly confused number in monitor care content — conflating the two is a dangerous error, not a rounding difference.     The standard method for both species is a cluster of halogen flood bulbs over a body-length platform, paired with a Retes stack — stacked slate, flagstone, or kiln-dried wood with spacers built in, developed by herpetoculturist Frank Retes of Goanna Ranch and now a standard fixture in varanid keeping Reptiles Magazine; ReptiFiles. The stack gives a real vertical thermal gradient plus secure crevices the animal can retreat into, letting it self-select its exact temperature rather than being stuck at whatever a single flat platform delivers.     UVB for Monitors

    Both species are diurnal baskers that need UVB. For a savannah, an Arcadia T5 12% Desert or 14% Dragon tube, or a Zoo Med ReptiSun 10.0 T5 HO, mounted in a reflective ProT5-style fixture with the animal's back roughly 14–16 inches below the lamp, is the standard recommendation Dubia; Catherine Love, DVM.     Humidity — Ambient vs. Burrow

    Keep ambient air around 50%, with the burrow itself running much higher — Reptilian Source puts air at 50–60% against substrate at 80%+ Dubia; Reptilian Source. Measure the burrow directly with a probe hygrometer rather than relying on a single ambient reading for the whole enclosure. Worth flagging plainly: these are husbandry recommendations built from keeper and care-sheet experience, not measured field data from actual wild burrows.

    Diet & Why Rodents Cause Obesity/Organ Disease

    Feed savannahs an insect- and invertebrate-based diet — roaches, crickets, locusts, superworms, and snails — with rodents kept occasional and lean rather than a dietary staple. Bennett's field data on wild savannahs found them eating up to roughly 150 insects a day, at around 10% of body weight, for 5–6 months of the year Reptile Supply, summarizing Bennett. Ackies follow the same logic as heavy insectivores.

    The mismatch is easy to miss because it looks like generosity rather than harm: a keeper feeding a mouse or two every week isn't doing anything that feels excessive on its face. But a wild savannah's own biology is built around several months of near-constant invertebrate feeding followed by several months of eating almost nothing at all during dry-season aestivation, exactly the cyclic pattern Bennett describes above. A captive animal fed rodents year-round, with no lean season and no dry-season fast to burn through stored fat, is being asked to run a metabolism built for feast-and-famine on feast alone — which is a large part of why hepatic lipidosis shows up so consistently in captive savannahs specifically, rather than being a generic reptile-obesity problem that hits every species evenly.

    Wild-Caught Risk & the Quarantine Case

    A meaningful share of savannah monitors sold in the pet trade are wild-caught rather than captive-bred, and that history brings a real parasite-load risk that a new keeper should plan for from day one rather than discover later. A fecal exam with an exotics veterinarian shortly after acquisition is worth treating as a standard part of setup cost, not an optional extra — a parasite-heavy animal in an otherwise correctly built enclosure can still fail to thrive, and it's the kind of problem an owner can easily mistake for a husbandry error when it's actually a health issue that predates the setup entirely. This is also part of why savannah monitors are generally recommended for experienced keepers rather than a first monitor: it's not just the size and digging strength, it's the real chance of managing an animal that arrives already compromised.
