Whole dried Baltic herring as a protein treat for your clean-up crew. An isopod colony lives mostly on leaf litter and decaying wood, but calcium and protein are the difference between a culture that survives and one that actually grows — and a whole dried fish is a dense package of both, fed out a small piece at a time.
- Complete nutrition in one treat: a full profile of amino acids, healthy fats and minerals, and calcium-rich to support proper molting and exoskeleton strength.
- Feed it in pieces: break off small portions and offer once or twice a week alongside leaf litter and plant-based foods — a little goes a long way for a colony.
- Keep the culture clean: remove uneaten portions after a few days, the same hygiene habit that keeps any bioactive system from tipping into a mess.
- Three packs of five fish: each whole dried herring runs roughly 2.5–3.5", so fifteen fish will feed a main crew and a backup culture for months.
- Beyond isopods: also suitable for millipedes and other detritivores in a culturing bin.
If you're building toward bioactive, our clean-up crew guide explains why a protein source belongs in the feeding rotation, and the bioactive substrate guide shows where the crew fits in the layers.
